On March 11, 1848, the Reform government of Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine and Robert Baldwin came into power in the Province of Canada. It was the first time that a government operated under the principle of “responsible government”, where the executive (the government) is accountable to the elected Assembly, not appointed officials.
